Yes, all phone companies have Phone Number Portability agreements which allow clients to keep their existing phone numbers and use them with any other phone carriers

What equipment and software do we need in order to deploy a VOIP PBX system?

You will need:

  • A copy of 3CX software running in a Windows based computer
  • Hard phone sets and/or 3CX software phone installed in your workstations or combination of both
  • Ethernet network with Cat5e or Cat6
  • A VOIP Provider (or VOIP Gateway if you keep using  your current analogue phone lines).

Most business use Hard phone sets

What is a VOIP Gateway?

A VOIP Gateway is a device that converts analogue phone lines to digital VOIP signal an vice versa. This maybe necessary if you are forced to continue using your current analogue physical lines.

Can we mix Analogue and SIP trunks at the same time ?

E-ssential Networks recommends SIP trunks for most implementation to reduce confusion and complexity. Analogue lines are only necessary for fax machines and analogue devices ( such as credit card and postage machines )

Do we need a separate server to run 3CX?

The short answer is no but we highly recommend running 3CX in a separate machine. This way,  if you restart your application server. The 3CX phone system will continue making and recieving phone calls.

What is a SIP trunk?

A SIP trunk is a virtual phone line that travels throught your ISP and the Internet so you can make and recieve phone calls. They compare to physical lines but rather then installing a physical wire they use the Internet as a method to reach IP PBX systems.

How many SIP trunks do we need?

That depends a how many concurrent calls a business expects to make and receive and any given time. Most small businesses can acomodate a good call flow with three to four SIP trunks?

Can we add more SIP trunk in the future?

Yes, you can continue to add more SIP trunks. You VOIP provider can provision as many SIP trunks as needed. Bear in mind that you must have the capacity or bandwidth to accomodate more SIP trunks

One of the benefits of using  VOIP Phones is that you can continue using your current computer data wiring. Most VOIP phone allow you to connect your computer and you phone at the same time. You can optionally add additional data points but in most cases is not necessary

Can we use our current ADSL connection to implement a VOIP PBX system?

In theory you can but it is not recommended. There are many variable that can affect a voice call and degrade call quality including lost calls. ADSL also lacks the upload bandwidth capability, security and voice prioritization that true VOIP carrier delivers.
